A Senate bill ties access to the Criminal Justice Treatment Account (CJTA) to a requirement allowing the use of medications to treat opioid use disorders in all county jails.
SB 6585, sponsored by Sen. Hans Zeiger (R–Puyallup), modifies the requirements for counties applying for funds from the CJTA. Previously, counties could apply for funds if they provided certain required programs. The bill adds a requirement for county jails to allow the use of all federally approved medications for opioid use disorder, as deemed appropriate by a medical professional, in order to receive funding from the CJTA.
One of AWC’s legislative priorities is to obtain funding for medication-assisted treatment (MAT) services in city jails across the state. We are working with our partners to develop an amendment to this bill granting cities access to the CJTA in order to provide a funding source for these critical programs.
If your city operates a jail, please contact your legislators requesting an amendment to SB 6585 enabling cities to access the CJTA.
