GMA update extension bill passes Legislature

Contact: Carl Schroeder, Shannon McClelland

A good little bill has just cleared both chambers and is off to the Governor’s desk for signature. HB 2296, sponsored by Rep. Dan Griffey (R–Allyn), makes one simple but impactful change for jurisdictions with a 2025 Growth Management Act (GMA) comprehensive plan update – it extends the due date by six months to December 31, 2025. With all the changes to the GMA over the last several years, we appreciate the acknowledgement that this is a heavy lift for cities.

The 2025 jurisdictions are as follows: Clallam, Clark, Island, Jefferson, Lewis, Mason, San Juan, Skagit, Thurston, and Whatcom counties and the cities within those counties. The 2024 jurisdictions received a six-month extension in session law passed last year.
