Community custody requirement for unlawful gun possession passes Senate
March 10, 2025
SB 5268, sponsored by Sen. Keith Wagoner (R–Sedro-Woolley), would require a year of community custody after a conviction for an offense involving unlawful possession of a firearm.
The community custody term is in addition to in-custody time an offender is sentenced to for the conviction.
The bill passed the Senate unanimously in a 49-0 vote on March 5 and moves to the House for a hearing in the Community Safety Committee. The bill was amended from an earlier version which would have classified unlawful possession of a firearm as a violent offense.
AWC supports this legislation to help ensure a well-managed and safe process for post-conviction transition back into communities.
