Firefighter safety best practices bill signed into law

Contact: Logan Bahr, Brandon Anderson

SB 5175, concerning firefighter safety, unanimously passed the Legislature and was signed by the Governor last week. The bill requires the Department of Labor and Industries to adopt best practices rules for reducing firefighters’ risk of exposure to carcinogens. Employers with firefighters who follow the established best practices by the department would become eligible for workers’ compensation premium discounts. The bill also provides grant funding for employers with limited resources to purchase protective equipment that may help reduce carcinogen exposure.
