Under the American Rescue Plan Act, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) received $12 million to help promote outdoor summer programs for kids. This year, through the Summer Experiences & Enrichment for Kids (SEEK) Fund, OSPI
was able to award $2 million to over 30 programs around the state. The remaining balance of funds will be distributed later for summer 2022 programs.
OSPI approached AWC earlier this summer, asking us to serve as the contractor to administer the funding opportunity. AWC then partnered with the Washington Recreation and Parks Association (WRPA) to develop the program, application process, and solicit
proposals for summer 2021.
SEEK was designed to aid in funding summer outdoor programs serving school-aged youth. The focus of the program is to provide enhanced and quality outdoor opportunities for those children and youth who have been most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
AWC is pleased to help get the funds out to cities, counties, and parks districts to expand their recreation programs for those kids.
This year, the turnaround for awarding the funds was very short. However, the funding round for summer 2022 programs will open later this fall. We encourage cities to review the funding opportunity and start putting together plans to apply.
