Transparency of local taxes on utilities

Contact: Candice Bock, Sheila Gall

SB 5712, sponsored by Sen. Bob Hasegawa (D–Seattle), was heard in the Senate Housing & Local Government Committee on January 13. It is similar to a bill introduced in 2019 that would require utilities to disclose state and local taxes on billing statements, on websites, or in billing inserts or other mailings.

A bill with similar disclosure requirements that impacted city utilities also passed in 2020. AWC testified about this potential overlap and will work with the sponsor to eliminate duplicative requirements for cities to eliminate confusion for those that have already implemented the 2020 legislation.
