An early action bill would add the requirement to plan for climate resiliency when public water systems submit their water system plans.

SB 5626, sponsored by Christine Rolfes (D–Bainbridge), is a short bill that would do the following:

• Starting January 1, 2024, requires group A public water systems serving 1,000 or more total connections to include a climate resilience element as part of water system plans;
• Requires the Department of Health to provide guidance and technical assistance; and
• Includes financial assistance loan eligibility for planning and projects to protect a water system from extreme weather events, including infrastructure and design projects.

Cities appreciate the focus on climate adaptation planning, especially the resources to carry out the work.
