State to prioritize second dose of COVID-19 vaccine the week of February 15

Contact: Sharon Swanson, Jacob Ewing

Due to a large number of individuals needing the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, the Department of Health has ordered that healthcare providers prioritize the distribution of the second vaccine during the week of February 15.

This imbalance in the state’s vaccine distribution plan occurred as a result of some healthcare providers using second-dose stock as the first dose for individuals. During the week of February 15, healthcare providers will limit first-dose appointments in order to prioritize second-dose appointments. The state expects that the distribution plan will be back on track starting the following week.

As of February 12, the state has used nearly 75 percent of its vaccine doses. In total, the state has given 987,682 doses, about 26,000 doses per day. However, these numbers include counts for both first and second doses. Across the state, over ten percent of Washingtonians have at least received their first dose and just under three percent of Washingtonians have received both doses.
