City authority expanded to make traffic safety improvements on nonarterial highways

Contact: Brandy DeLange, Brianna Morin

A bill addressing traffic safety improvements has passed the Legislature.

As introduced, SB 5687, from Sens. Claire Wilson (D–Federal Way) and Marko Liias (D–Edmonds), aimed to provide cities the authority to adopt a maximum speed limit up to 20 mph on any nonarterial highway. Currently, cities and towns may establish this speed limit on nonarterial highways only if they are within a residence district or business district. The bill expanded that authority, doing away with the district limitations.

SB 5687 also intended to authorize cities to install traffic safety cameras and issue speed violations on roadways identified in a school walk area. However, this provision was removed in committee.

AWC supported the legislation and we’re happy to report that it has passed the Legislature. It now awaits the Governor’s signature.
