HB 1912, concerning pension benefits for volunteer firefighters, was unanimously voted out of the House on March 6. The Volunteer Firefighters' and Reserve Officers' Relief and Pension System provides death, disability, medical, and retirement benefits to volunteer firefighters, reserve officers, and emergency medical workers in cities, towns, and fire protection districts. The pension system is funded by volunteer contributions, employer contributions, and a portion of the fire insurance premium tax.

If passed, HB 1912 would increase the annual pension fee from $60 to $90, half of which may continue to be paid by the member at the employer's choice. The bill also increases the pension paid to plan members from a maximum of $300 to a maximum of $350 plus $10 per month for each year that the retirement fee is paid beyond 25 years.

AWC is continuing to analyze the proposals but the direct local government impact is unclear at this time.
