Bill to require certification for public safety telecommunicators

Contact: Sharon Swanson, Jacob Ewing

A bill requiring public safety telecommunicators to receive certification and standard training will receive a hearing this week.

SB 5555, sponsored by Senator Kevin Van De Wege (D–Sequim), establishes the Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification Board (Board). The Board is tasked with creating a certification and statewide training program for public safety telecommunicators.

SB 5555 defines a public safety telecommunicator as a first responder who has successfully completed the training, certification, or recertification standards established by the State of Washington. This definition includes 911 dispatchers.

AWC needs your feedback.  Does your city have 911 dispatchers? How will this legislation impact your ability to hire and retain 911 dispatchers? Please contact Sharon Swanson with your comments.

Date to remember

SB 5555 is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Ways & Means Committee on Friday, January 21 at 4 pm.
