On February 3, international management consulting firm McKinsey agreed to pay $573 million in settlements to 47 US states for its role in the opioid crisis.
According to Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson, Washington State will use its $13.5 million share of the settlement for investments in treatment, prevention, and other efforts to address the opioid epidemic. Specific details on how the funds will
be distributed around the state are forthcoming.
As a part of the settlement, Washington jurisdictions are not prohibited from bringing their own suits against McKinsey.
Attorney General Ferguson filed suit against McKinsey in 2017 alleging the firm was liable for its role in developing a marketing campaign targeting doctors with misinformation about the drug OxyContin and the risk of opioid addiction.
In addition to McKinsey, the state has filed suit against McKesson, Cardinal Health, and AmerisourceBergen. Trials are tentatively scheduled to begin in May of this year. The state’s case against Purdue Pharmaceuticals is pending; Purdue recently
declared bankruptcy.
