Proposal seeks to provide cities with an option to prohibit open carry of firearms

Contact: Sharon Swanson, Jacob Ewing

This week, the Legislature will consider newly proposed legislation that would allow cities, towns, and counties to restrict the open carry of a firearm at any public meeting, building, or facility owned or operated by a municipality.

In addition to allowing cities to restrict firearms in certain public spaces, SB 5568, sponsored by Senator Patty Kuderer (D–Cylde Hill), also provides the option for local governments to ban the open carry of firearms at a permitted demonstration within their respective jurisdiction.

While AWC rarely takes a position on firearms legislation, we do support SB 5568. It provides the option for local governments to restrict firearms but does not mandate a firearms ban.

Date to remember

SB 5568 is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Law & Justice Committee on Monday, January 17 at 9:30 am.
