Firefighter safety bill scheduled for hearing

Contact: Logan Bahr, Brandon Anderson

SB 5175, concerning firefighter safety, is scheduled for a public hearing on Tuesday, January 22 in the Senate Labor & Commerce Committee. The bill requires the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) to adopt best practice rules for reducing firefighters’ risk of exposure to carcinogens. Employers with firefighters who follow the established best practices by the department could become eligible for workers’ compensation premium discounts with passage of this bill.

The bill would also provide funding for L&I to assist employers who have limited resources to purchase equipment that may help reduce carcinogen exposure.
