Accessory dwelling unit bill proponents reaching out to city officials

Contact: Carl Schroeder

AWC is aware that an advocacy group from Seattle, the Sightline Institute, has circulated a “sign-on” letter to city elected officials in support of state accessory dwelling unit (ADU) legislation.

While the “sign-on” letter doesn’t reference any bill, Sightline is promoting a bill, HB 2570, that was introduced on January 14. AWC was not provided with an opportunity to review or provide input on the proposal prior to its introduction, but on initial review, Section 4 of the bill appears to contain preemptive provisions similar to previous proposals (SB 5812/HB 1797 from 2019) that led many cities to ask AWC to oppose those earlier bills.

We encourage you to read the proposed legislation when considering whether to sign onto this advocacy letter.

Please share your perspectives on the proposal with Carl as we prepare to engage in conversations on this bill.
