Bill proposing community service for litterers gets a hearing

Contact: Sharon Swanson, Shannon McClelland

A bill that imposes 40 hours of community service litter removal (in addition to fines) for littering was heard in the House Environment & Energy Committee on January 17. AWC testified in favor of HB 1088, sponsored by Rep. Drew MacEwen (R-Union).

AWC is requesting a short amendment to clarify that municipalities that do not currently have a community service program, or who may lack the resources to supervise litter removal, are not required to create one.
