Training and scholarships
RMSA offers members tools and educational opportunities to better manage your risk.
Training scholarships
Training reduces risk! This is why RMSA supports members by offering scholarships for attending approved workshops and training sessions. Each month, RMSA News highlights training opportunities eligible for scholarships. For additional ideas, please review our list of scholarship examples.
New for 2025 – RMSA Scholarship Program details:
- Eligibility amount: Each member has an annual eligibility amount equal to 2% of their premium, with a minimum of $250 and a maximum of $2,000. Once this amount is used, no further scholarships will be available for the year.
- AWC training events: In addition to the annual eligibility amount, each member entity is entitled to one free scholarship for each approved AWC training event. This means your entity can receive a free scholarship for approved AWC events attended throughout the year. If you wish to apply for additional scholarships, these will count against your annual eligibility amount. Approved AWC trainings:
- Annual Conference
- Labor Relations Institute
- Municipal Budgeting & Fiscal Management Workshop
- Elected Officials Essentials
- Other AWC trainings – by approval only.
- First-come, first-served basis: Scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. To ensure fair distribution, 80% of the budget will be allocated until exhausted, while the remaining 20% will be reserved for member entities that have not received any scholarships during the year.
What the scholarship covers
Scholarships cover event registration costs only. For training sessions costing $200 or less, the full amount will be reimbursed. For costs exceeding $200, reimbursement will be 50%, up to a maximum of $1,000. Within 90 days of completing the training a certificate of attendance/proof of completion must be submitted in order to receive funds. After 90 days, unclaimed funds will be forfeited and returned to the general fund. All scholarship documentation, including new applications, must be submitted by December 15.
