May 4 opioid settlement sign-on deadline for 44 cities

Learn what 44 cities need to know about the recent Six Remnant Defendants National Opioid Settlement for local governments, including a May 4 sign-on deadline.

Please note that AWC is facilitating information sharing about opioid settlements. The following content is for informational purposes and should not be considered legal advice. Cities should consult their city’s legal counsel with specific questions.

Many Washington cities that have been eligible to participate in previous opioid settlement funds are receiving emails from the settlement administrator about a new national opioid settlement with six pharmacy distribution groups and their affiliates. To receive a share of the $97.6 million settlement, the unrepresented cities from the 44 cities listed in the settlement will need to affirmatively respond using the local government sign-on process sent by the administrator by the May 4, 2026, deadline.

Unlike most of the previous settlements, the fund is limited to local governments. Washington state is not a party to this lawsuit and is not sharing in this settlement. This proposed nationwide settlement is the result of direct litigation by more than 4,000 local governments that was centralized in the national multidistrict litigation (MDL) and negotiated by MDL counsel.

Information about the case is available on the Remnant Defendants section of the national settlement website. That site includes the terms of the settlement and the allocation percentages from the fund for each eligible Washington local government in Exhibit E, pages 115-117.
