Beware! Cyber attacks on the rise

Contact: RMSA staff

There has been a significant increase in cyber security incidents involving RMSA members. Phishing emails that result in compromised email accounts and fraudulent payment requests are occurring at an alarming rate.

Pause before you click

More than 90% of cyberattacks begin with a phishing email, often encouraging users to click a malicious link or urgently update payment information. These messages can appear to come from trusted vendors or contacts, making them difficult to detect.

Simple steps to avoid a loss

Look for phishing red flags, including:

  • A sense of urgency requesting action such as clicking a link or requesting a payment. Hover over a link before clicking – does the URL address look real or is it a bunch of gibberish? Unless you are certain it is a legitimate link do not click it!
  • Unexpected requests – is this someone that you know and were expecting an email from?
  • Email look-alike addresses – hover over an email address to make sure it is legitimate. Bad actors often create fake email addresses making them appear similar to a real one.
  • Changing payment methods – any requests to change payment information must be confirmed through a secondary source. Use a trusted phone number and call verifying the authenticity. Verification should never occur by responding to the email.

Cyber security Member Standards

RMSA’s Cyber security Member Standards require safeguards be in place to mitigate risk including cyber awareness training, IT support, and secondary verification procedures for payments. Failure to follow these standards will result in penalties being applied to claims including a tiered deductible and, in some instances, no coverage.
