In 2025 the Legislature passed a law to protect vulnerable homeowners from predatory real estate sale offers. Although the bill exempted public entities acquiring land for transportation purposes, it did not exempt any other purpose for public benefit. HB 2624, sponsored by Rep. Brandy Donaghy (D–Everett), closes this gap. The bill has passed the Legislature and awaits the Governor’s signature.
HB 2624 exempts the following from the requirements of Chapter 61.40 RCW:
Any public entity, a federally recognized Indian tribe, or a nonprofit nature conservancy corporation or association as defined in RCW 84.34.250 acquiring real property for a public benefit with an appraisal prior to the closing of the transaction.
