Mandatory community custody after gun offenses bill is back

Contact: Derrick Nunnally, Emma Shepard

SB 5268, sponsored by Sen. Keith Wagoner (R–Sedro-Woolley), would require a year of community custody after a conviction for an offense involving unlawful possession of a firearm.

The bill requires the court to impose a year of mandatory community custody for any conviction involving unlawful possession of a firearm. It passed the Senate unanimously last session, passed again unanimously in January, and will receive a public hearing in the House on Wednesday.

AWC supports this legislation to help ensure a well-managed and safe process for post-conviction transition back into communities.

You can add your voice to AWC’s support for this improvement to public safety by signing into the committee hearing as pro. This shows committee members your support for the bill without having to testify.

Dates to remember

SB 5268 is scheduled for public hearing in the House Community Safety Committee on Monday, February 18, at 10:30 am.
