New Year’s resolution - safety

Contact: Retro staff

The start of a new year is a natural time to set goals, but when it comes to worker safety, the most effective resolutions aren’t big or flashy. They’re simple, visible, and reinforced through daily systems.

  • Encourage one small, achievable safety habit for each department/team: pause before a task to identify hazards, consistently wear required PPE, or report near misses early.
  • Embed safety into existing processes: include during onboarding, performance check-ins, and return-to-work conversations.
  • Equip supervisors with consistent talking points: safety expectations can be reinforced across departments, not dependent on individual management styles.
  • Reinforce safe behaviors through recognition: team shout outs, internal communications, or informal acknowledgement of proactive reporting.
  • Support a non-punitive reporting culture: ensure employees at all levels feel safe raising concerns without fear of blame or retaliation.
  • Align productivity and safety expectations: employees shouldn’t feel pressured to choose speed over safety.

This year, make your organzation’s resolution simple, give workers the tools, permission, and support to choose safety every day. When safety is consistently reinforced through systems and leadership support, individual resolutions turn into a stronger, more resilient safety culture.
