We had excellent speakers at the RMSA Annual Meeting and AWC Member Expo again this year. We’ve compiled some key takeaways from these events you’ll want to remember.

  • Financial controls are a team sport! Staff, elected officials, and even your city attorney all play a role in safeguarding public funds. Build your team, identify your roles, and leverage each other's strengths to protect your public funds.
  • Crisis communications matter. How you communicate with your community matters. If a crisis event happens, how are you keeping your community in the loop? Make sure you push updates out quickly and regularly to keep your community informed and be the true source of news and information.
  • Update your HR policies! Regularly reviewing your employee handbooks, job descriptions, and performing routine performance reviews all contribute to mitigating employment risks. It also makes sure employment expectations are clearly defined, and employees  have reliable expectations that support them.
  • Practice tabletop exercises. We can all imagine a cyber security event that locks you out of your computers or a tragic event that stuns your community. Sit down and practice how you are going to respond to those events. Who are you notifying? What roles does each person hold? What actions need to be taken? Practice walking through a scenario so you are prepared in the “what if” scenarios.

Need help identifying ways to implement these practices at your entity? Contact our staff we’ll be happy to offer ideas.
