Stepping safely: preventing slips trips and falls on sidewalks

Contact: RMSA staff

As winter weather sets in, slips, trips, and falls become one of the more common causes of injury claims for cities and towns. Using a proactive approach of planning, maintenance and communication, you can significantly reduce these risks. Use these five proactive tips to reduce risks.

  1. Develop and enforce clear sidewalk maintenance policies
Establish written policies that define who is responsible for snow and ice removal on sidewalks, crosswalks and around public buildings. Clarify timelines and expectations for public works crews and property owners, such as clearing sidewalks within 24 hours. The snowfall. Consistent enforcement ensures fairness and helps defend against liability claims.
  2. Prioritize preventative maintenance and equipment readiness
Ensure snowplows, sanders, de-icers and other winter maintenance equipment are inspected and ready before the season begins. Stockpile adequate materials like sand, salt and de-icers. Treat sidewalks in high traffic areas early, especially near city hall, bus stops, and other municipally owned properties.
  3. Keep drains and gutters clear
Standing water from clogged drains and pooling water on uneven sidewalks or sloped walkways can create slick surfaces and algae build up. Evaluate problem areas for potential trench drains or permeable pavement and incorporate regular inspections and cleaning of drainage systems.
  4. Communicate early and often with the public
Use your city's website, social media and local radio to share winter safety messages and maintenance updates. Find residents and businesses of their sidewalk clearing responsibilities and promote simple safety tips such as wearing traction footwear and using handrails.
  5. Document everything
Maintain logs of snow and ice removal activities, including dates, times, and materials used. Good documentation can demonstrate due diligence if an incident occurs.
