National preparedness month

Contact: Retro staff

The theme for September’s National Preparedness Month is Readiness Starts at Home. You may have prepared your city/organization for an emergency, but have you ensured your employees handled the risks at home? The best way to respond effectively to a disaster is to be prepared on all fronts. We want to make sure everyone's home and family are safe, so the focus is on handling any emergency.

As you test your Great Shakeout preparedness at your worksite locations this year, consider providing employees with some of these resources they can use at home:

  • Know your hazards. Determine the types of hazards that might affect where you and your family live.
  • Make a family emergency plan. Build a plan to help ease stress and save time when a disaster does strike. Tailor your plan to fit you and your family’s specific needs and hazards.
  • Build an emergency supply kit. When you build your kit, think about the essential things that you and your family use every day. What might make your lives easier and safer in an emergency?
  • Get involved in your local community by preparing for a disaster. Emergencies can happen quickly, and knowing your local resources and community capabilities could be lifesaving.
