Contact: Candice Bock, Derrick Nunnally, Emma Shepard

SB 5705, sponsored by Sen. Marko Liias (D–Edmonds), aims to deter repeat traffic infractions with harsher penalties.

The bill primarily increases penalties for repeat traffic violations and adds more fines for offenses involving vulnerable road users. The bill’s goal is to deter repeat traffic infractions, enhance road safety, and provide funding for education programs on vulnerable road users.

The bill proposes increasing fines for second or subsequent offenses within two years for:

  • Tailgating: Increases fines, adds extra fine for following vulnerable roadway users too closely
  • Speeding: Doubles the fine for speeding over 10 mph
  • Negligent driving: Doubles the fine
  • Distracted driving: Doubles the fine for personal electronic device use or in school, playground, or crosswalk areas
  • Seatbelt violations: Doubles the fine

AWC appreciates the sponsor bringing this bill and supports it as part of our efforts to improve traffic and community safety for all our residents.

The bill passed the Senate with near-unanimous support and now moves over to the House Transportation Committee for further consideration.
