September is National Preparedness Month. Is your entity prepared to deal with a disaster when it strikes? Now is the time to learn about resources available to help you be prepared.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has a campaign called “Take Control in 1, 2, 3.” This encourages preparedness in three simple steps:
- Assess your needs. Every entity has unique needs. Several factors can influence the steps you need to take to prepare your workplace for disasters, should they arise. Be aware of your employees, equipment, operations, and other useful elements to consider when developing your emergency plan.
- Make a plan. Once you have assessed your needs, you can plan for where to go and what to do if a disaster strikes. Your emergency supply kit should include items that meet your entity’s needs. Be sure to include enough for the number of in-office staff, and make sure it's in a container(s) that staff can reasonably lift and move if needed.
- Engage your support network. Get to know your community because they—along with surrounding cities, counties, and special districts—can be a support network before, during, and after a disaster by providing both emotional and practical support.
