Mayor Julia Johnson of Sedro-Woolley was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Association of Washington Cities (AWC). Mayor Johnson was appointed to represent District 14, comprised of the 19 cities in Island, San Juan, Skagit, and Whatcom counties.
Johnson was elected to the Sedro-Woolley city council in 2016 and has served as mayor since 2018. She has served on AWC’s Legislative Priorities Committee and holds AWC’s Certificate of Municipal Leadership.
“One of the things I value most about my involvement with AWC is the opportunity to work with other city leaders and help influence positive changes in our state,” remarks Mayor Johnson.
“I am excited about the strong engagement and fresh ideas that Mayor Johnson brings to the AWC Board,” said AWC President Betsy Wilkerson. “I look forward to working with her in the coming year to achieve great things for our 281 cities across Washington state.”
“By serving on the AWC Board, Mayor Johnson will be able to ensure that the voice of Sedro-Woolley and all 19 cities in Skagit, Whatcom, San Juan, and Island counties are heard,” said AWC CEO Deanna Dawson. “Julia brings a passion for service and a strong knowledge of her region to the table, and I know she will be an outstanding addition to the AWC Board.”
Johnson’s community involvement has included serving on the boards of Community Action of Skagit County, the Skagit Council of Governments, and Skagit Transit, and participating in the local Rotary and Soroptimist clubs.
Founded in 1933, AWC is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan corporation that represents Washington's cities and towns before the state legislature, the state executive branch, and with regulatory agencies. Membership is voluntary. However, AWC consistently maintains 100% participation from Washington’s 281 cities and towns.
AWC also provides training, data and publications, and programs such as the AWC Employee Benefit Trust, AWC Risk Management Service Agency, AWC Workers’ Comp Retro, AWC Drug and Alcohol Consortium, and AWC GIS Consortium.
