No changes this year to WVRA

Contact: Sharon Swanson, Jacob Ewing

After a rollercoaster ride of changes, the Washington Voting Rights Act (WVRA) failed to make it out of committee before cutoff.

SB 5597 was poised to make significant changes to the WVRA; however, after several rounds of amendments, the bill failed to advance out of House Appropriations Committee before the February 28 deadline.

AWC is appreciative of all our member cities who helped work and shape this bill. We also appreciate the many state legislators who listened to our concerns and made significant changes to the bill.

While SB 5597 didn’t pass this session, we expect that similar legislation will be introduced in 2023. AWC looks forward to working with legislators to ensure that everyone has access to free and fair elections in our state.
