Broadband bill to increase internet speeds

Contact: Brandy DeLange

SB 5715, sponsored by Sen. Wellman (D–Mercer Island), modifies and expands the definition of broadband from 25 megabits per second download to 100 megabits, and from three megabits per second upload to 20 megabits. The current federal speed standard is 25/3, whereas the bill would change it to 100/20. Faster, more reliable download and upload speeds are vital to ensuring equitable and consistent access to telemedicine, education, and economic development for all Washingtonians.

AWC supports this legislation and thanks the bill sponsor for bringing it forward.

Date to remember

SB 5715 will be heard in the Senate Environment, Energy & Technology committee on January 26 at 8 am.
