State considers COVID-19 relief grants for convention businesses

Contact: Candice Bock, Jacob Ewing

Businesses impacted by conventions being canceled during the COVID-19 pandemic could see direct relief headed their way.

SB 5770, sponsored by Sens. Mark Mullet (D-Issaquah) and David Frockt (D–Seattle), will dedicate $5 million of the state’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to businesses who host conventions or who provide services to conventions. Eligible businesses could receive up to $500,000 in grant funds to replace lost revenues incurred between 2019 and 2020.

Under the bill, those eligible include businesses that:

  • Have hosted a convention in Washington;
  • Provide support services to conventions in Washington; or
  • Depend on the function of conventions to sell goods and services in Washington.

Date to remember

SB 5770 is scheduled for a public hearing in the Senate Business, Financial Services & Trade Committee on January 20 at 8 am.
