WSDOT announces availability of National Highway Freight Program funds for eligible freight projects

Contact: Brandy DeLange

The Washington State Department of Transportation is announcing the availability of National Highway Freight Program (NHFP) funds for eligible freight projects. Through the 2021-2023 Transportation Budget, the Washington State Legislature directed WSDOT to allocate approximately $50 million of 2022-2025 NHFP funds to eligible local freight projects (non-WSDOT projects) as referenced under project ID G2000100 in the Substitute Senate Bill 5165 Sec. 311(8), and in the LEAP Transportation Document 2021-2023 biennium.

WSDOT is requesting metropolitan planning organizations/regional transportation planning organizations, tribes, cities, counties and ports to collaborate and develop regional lists of priority freight projects.

For more detailed information, please see NHFP program: project request memo. This memo outlines the program background, project request and submittal process, and project eligibility requirement, selection process and timeline. The completed regional project submittal package must be submitted by MPO/RTPOs by email to zhaow@wsdot.wa.gov no later than March 16, 2022.

Materials and available resources regarding the process, including the project submission forms, instruction sheet, NHFP data map tool, NHFP crash data request form and project scoring criteria, can be found on WSDOT’s website.

WSDOT will hold an informational webinar on January 19 from 9:30 to 11 am on the NHFP project request and submittal process to assist project sponsors and MPO/RTPOs with preparing regional submissions. Please use this link to register for the webinar.
