AWC has released a new equity tool to support cities in improving the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in their operations, policies, and workforces: the AWC Equity Resource Guide: Tools and case studies for Washington’s cities. The resource guide contains sections on budgeting, housing, transportation & infrastructure, criminal justice, and accessing
the democratic process.
The guide also includes a chapter (authored by yours truly) on human resources practices to help cities enhance DEI in their hiring and workforce development and build more diverse workforces. Much of the chapter, indeed the entire guide, is devoted to
case studies, giving real-world examples of the techniques that public employers are using to improve diversity and equity in their workforce practices. It highlights the conscious efforts that city employers are making to better represent and embrace
the diversity of their communities.
It is our hope at AWC that the Equity Resource Guide will be a useful starting point for cities looking to expand their own DEI practices. The current period of relatively high turnover and city workforce rebuilding may provide a golden opportunity
to incorporate such practices into your city’s staffing process as you continue to rebuild your city workforce. If you have further questions about the guide, feel free to reach out to me at mattd@awcnet.org.
