State Supreme Court accepts electoral maps completed by State Redistricting Commission

Contact: Sharon Swanson, Jacob Ewing

On December 3, the Washington State Court ruled unanimously that the State Redistricting Commission had substantially completed its redistricting work before the November 15 deadline.

With this ruling, the Supreme Court will not exercise its authority to redraw the electoral maps. Instead, the court ordered the Redistricting Commission to complete any remaining tasks necessary to finish the redistricting work. The court, however, did not weigh in on the constitutionality of the maps, which could still be challenged under the federal Voting Rights Act.

Unless the maps are challenged, the newly approved maps will be used for the next decade beginning with the 2022 midterm elections.
