Want to earn 10% off your workers’ comp premiums for all firefighters? Labor & Industries (L&I)just released details to their Firefighter Injury and Illness Reduction (FIIRE) pilot program. But you need to act quickly as
there is a short window to apply and earn the discount. Cities, towns and fire districts only have until June 30 to turn in the application.
Eligibility
Any jurisdiction paying workers’ comp premiums for firefighters under the 6904-firefighter risk class can apply for the pilot program. To find out if you qualify or learn how much you could save on your annual
premiums, send an email to retro@awcnet.org.
Deadline
Entities must apply by June 30. This is a two-year pilot program and L&I has not put in a provision to enter midway into the program. Apply now, or you may never get the chance!
How to apply
Submit L&I’s application form by June 30. Once the application
is received by L&I, you will receive a Memorandum of Participation by email.
What is FIIRE?
The FIIRE program was designed to reduce hazards in the firefighting occupations that cause incidents, injuries, and illnesses. Fire departments will look at all aspects of their safety program and provide collaboration
with other jurisdictions around WA in the pilot program. The two-year pilot program has several requirements including having a safety committee, a Return to Work plan, a safety improvement plan and joining a firefighter safety collaborative, run
by L&I. Because you are a member of AWC’s Retro Program – you are already doing most of these items! Get more information on the FIIRE requirements on L&I’s website.
How the discount works
During the first quarter, participating organizations will receive 5% off their premiums for fire departments that participate. The eligible premium rate reduction of 5% for risk class 6904 is for the 3rd
quarter 2021 premiums, due October 31. Fire departments that participant in the FIIRE pilot program year one will be eligible for a premium rate reduction of 10% discount for risk class 6904 for each year they participate starting October 1.
Don’t miss out – deadline is June 30
We encourage you to review the requirements and complete the application right away. For questions, refer to the L&I website or contact AWC Retro staff.
