Amended bill reinstitutes polygraph requirement for police

Contact: Sharon Swanson, Jacob Ewing

After originally removing the requirement for police applicants to undergo a polygraph, the Senate retained the requirement with stipulations.

SB 6148, sponsored by Sen. Jesse Salomon (D–Shoreline), looks to remove barriers for qualified applicants during the police recruitment process. With its most recent update, the bill retains the requirement for all police applicants to undergo a polygraph; however, new language proposed by the Senate Law & Justice Committee clarifies that a law enforcement agency is not required to reject an applicant solely based on the results of a polygraph examination.

SB 6148 is currently with the Senate Rules Committee.
