Bill requires additional protection of archaeological and cultural sites

Contact: Logan Bahr, Maggie Carol

A new bill aimed at protecting archaeological and cultural sites creates redundant processes.

HB 2850, sponsored by Rep. Debra Lekanoff (D–La Conner), requires projects receiving state monies to consult federally recognized tribes, the Governor’s Office of Indian Affairs, and the Department of Archeology and Historic Preservation before any groundbreaking activity can occur.

AWC has some concerns with the creation of new, possibly redundant processes and has been working with the bill sponsor on improvements to the legislation.

Dates to remember

HB 2850 is scheduled for public hearing in the House State Government & Tribal Relations Committee at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, February 4.
