Bill to reduce wait time for basic law enforcement training gets a hearing

Contact: Sharon Swanson, Shannon McClelland

HB 1253, sponsored by Rep. Shelley Kloba (D–Kirkland), provides that law enforcement personnel must begin basic training during the first two months of employment, reducing the time from the current six months. In addition to the change in HB 1253, AWC is working to secure an increase in funding to authorize a total of 19 Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLEA) classes per year.

AWC supports HB 1253 and will testify in favor at the hearing.

Dates to remember

The hearing is scheduled in the House Public Safety Committee on Monday, January 21 at 1:30 pm.
