Bill restricting cannabis business siting is scheduled for a committee vote

Contact: Sharon Swanson, Shannon McClelland

HB 1003 was heard in the House Commerce & Gaming Committee on January 15. The bill adds additional locations frequented by children, including unlicensed day care centers and school bus stops, where a cannabis business would not be able to site within a thousand feet. Notably, the bill would be retroactive and apply to license renewals. For more details, see our previous article.

AWC testified with concerns about the overbroad nature of the bill. The Liquor & Cannabis Board testified that the bill would immediately impact 35% of the retail market and they estimate a 30% annual loss of revenue to the state.

AWC will continue to monitor the bill and express our concerns on the bills impacts to a city’s local zoning decisions. Please contact Sharon with any concerns.
