Cities successfully report public record data under new mandate

Contact: Logan Bahr, Brandon Anderson

City and town compliance with the new state requirement to report public records data far exceeded the overall state average. Thanks to your tremendous work, 94 percent of Washington’s cities and towns submitted their public records data or indicated that their city did not meet the reporting threshold to the Joint Audit and Review Committee (JLARC). Overall public agency compliance for the new mandate was 34 percent.

In 2017, the Legislature passed ESHB 1594, which directed state agencies and local governments to report annually on performance metrics related to public records retention, management, and disclosure. JLARC is currently reviewing the 2017 data and will report their findings to the Legislature in January 2019.

The 2018 reporting cycle runs from January 1, 2018 – December 31, 2018. Your city’s 2018 public records report will be due to JLARC by July 1, 2019.

If you have feedback on the online reporting process, please contact JLARC at JLARCPublicRecStudy@leg.wa.gov.
