ICC proposed building code changes to expand the use of mass timber for tall wood buildings

Contact: Carl Schroeder,Regina Adams

The International Code Council (ICC) is considering changes to building codes that expand the use of mass timber, such as cross laminated timber (CLT), in tall wood buildings. Mass timber panels are used for wood, floor, and roof construction.

The proposed code changes include expanding the use of mass timber for tall wood buildings from the current six stories to up to 18 stories. ICC members will vote on the amendments in November. Additional voting information can be found here.

Building officials are encouraged to track the issue. For more information contact Brian Hatfield, Forest Products Sector Lead at the Department of Commerce at 360-819-2936.
