Cyber survival for local governments

Contact: AWC online learning

The proposed federal infrastructure package sets aside one of the largest investments in local cybersecurity measures—over $1 billion in historic cybersecurity grant and loan programs available for local governments. While it’s still not clear how the proposed State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program will be administered, local governments can anticipate that state allocation plans must be developed in consultation with and approved by localities.

Local governments have increasingly become a focal point for malicious cyberattacks. The impacts of these attacks can be enormous and far-reaching. This webinar offers Washington cities the opportunity to learn about various types of cyberattack events and mitigation strategies from experts in the field.

In this recorded webinar, former City of Seattle Chief Information Security Officer Michael Hamilton shares his own observations gleaned from decades of monitoring and defending municipalities and other public sector entities from cyber threats. Hear descriptions of real incidents, learn what to do in the critical hours and days after a cyberattack, and discover how key control areas can limit the impact of cyber incidents. He is joined by John Traeger, IT Manager for the City of Issaquah, who will share insights from a city perspective. He is also joined by Jake Milstein from Critical Insight.

  • Gain an understanding of the cybersecurity controls needed for a modern local government IT system
  • Learn a method to identify and minimize gaps and vulnerabilities
  • Examine how to estimate the security needs of your city to prepare a request for federal funds
  • This webinar is for elected officials, senior city leadership, clerks, and council assistants.
