A bill creating a consistent statewide law on the option to implement rank choice voting will have a hearing in the House of Representatives.

A bill creating a consistent statewide law on the option to implement rank choice voting will have a hearing in the House of Representatives. HB 2250, sponsored by Rep. Mia Gregerson (D–SeaTac) and its companion, SB 6156, sponsored by Sen. T'wina Nobles (D–Fircrest), gives cities the option, not mandate, to go to ranked choice voting if they choose. If cities adopt ranked choice voting, they are responsible for the cost of implementing the ranked choice voting election, including purchasing election equipment and funding voter education for the new system. The bill also creates a workgroup.

AWC will continue to monitor this, and other elections related bills, as the session moves forward.

Dates to remember

HB 2250 is scheduled for public hearing in the House State Government & Tribal Relations Committee on January 24 at 1:30 pm.
