Black History Month starts February 1 and runs the entire month of February!

Black History Month starts February 1 and runs the entire month of February! There are lots of ways people can celebrate Black and African American people while honoring their culture, contributions, and experiences:

  • Get reacquainted with the Northwest African American Museum, which recently reopened for the first time since 2020.
  • Consider creating a city proclamation recognizing Black History Month. For inspiration, check out these examples: Monroe, Redmond, and Sammamish.
  • Learn about the long history of redlining in Washington cities. Mapping Inequality lets visitors browse more than 150 interactive maps to see how housing discrimination impacts cities and residents.
  • Attend a community event like the celebration that the City of Olympia is hosting to honor Black History Month on February 18.
