The Senate passed a bill providing small cities with a higher wage ceiling to hire unskilled day labor while avoiding a conflict of interest.

The Senate passed a bill providing small cities with a higher wage ceiling to hire unskilled day labor while avoiding a conflict of interest.

SB 6326 allows a city official in a city of fewer than 1,499 residents to personally benefit from a contract from unskilled day labor as long as monthly wages do not exceed $1,000. Previously, it was considered a conflict of interest if a city official personally benefited from a contract if the unskilled day laborer received a wage of more than $200 per month.

AWC expects this bill to positively benefit smaller cities in their efforts to secure unskilled day labor contracts within their communities.

Dates to remember

SB 6326 is scheduled for public hearing in the House Local Government Committee at 10 am on Tuesday, February 25.
