Companion bills in the House and Senate picked up amendments on their journey through the Legislature.

HB 2742, sponsored by Rep. Shelley Kloba (D–Kirkland), and SB 6281, sponsored by Sen. Reuven Carlyle (D–Seattle), bring sweeping changes to consumer privacy regulations in Washington. These bills focus on businesses and organizations that:

  • Control or process data for at least 100,000 consumers;
  • Receive 50% or more of their gross revenue from the sale of personal data; or
  • Control or process information on 25,000 or more consumers.

Municipalities are not subject to any of these requirements. Previously, the bill contained a preemption of all local laws, ordinances, and regulations regarding personal data. However, the respective committees amended the bills to exempt local laws, ordinances, and regulations regarding facial recognition.

AWC supports the legislation as amended.

SB 6281 is currently with the Senate Ways & Means Committee.
