There were numerous attempts to change the state’s marijuana statutes this session but, ultimately, none of the proposed bills passed the Legislature.
After I-502 legalized marijuana in Washington, there have been multiple attempts by the Legislature to preempt city local authority to regulate marijuana businesses. This year was no different; however, both preemption bills, HB 2336 and HB 2471, failed to pass. Preemption bills are likely to make an appearance in the next legislative session.
AWC’s next steps
AWC will:
- Continue monitoring the actions of federal authorities in light of the recent Cole Memo rescission;
- Follow recent court decisions in the state regarding local government authority to regulate legalized marijuana activities; and
- Continue to engage legislators to build support for local authority.
