Bill proposes changes to workers’ compensation medical access

Contact: Candice Bock, Leah White

SB 5847 proposes changes to provider choice and medical network standards within the workers’ compensation system. The bill would require employers to inform injured workers of their right to choose a treating provider and prohibit employers from directing care to a specific provider. It also establishes additional standards for provider networks under the Department of Labor and Industries, allows injured workers to seek care outside the network if a provider is not available within 15 miles of the worker’s home, and expands oversight and utilization review authority and timelines.

While the bill focuses on medical access, it could affect overall system costs and provider participation. Private sector stakeholders have raised concerns about potential cost increases and the possibility of weakening medical provider networks. AWC continues to monitor the bill.

SB 5847 is scheduled for a vote in the House Appropriations Committee on March 2 at 10:30 am.
