Bill would prohibit local law enforcement from hiring federal police officers

Contact: Derrick Nunnally, Emma Shepard

HB 2641, sponsored by Tarra Simmons (D–Bremerton), would prohibit local law enforcement agencies from hiring certain federal employees.

This short bill adds a new section to 10.93 RCW saying that general and limited Washington law enforcement agencies cannot hire anyone who was a sworn officer of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement on or after January 20, 2025. The bill excludes anyone already hired before that date.

This bill is one of at least a dozen aimed at making state-level changes in response to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity.

Dates to remember

HB 2641 is scheduled for a public hearing in the House Community Safety Committee on Thursday, January 29, at 8 am.
