OLYMPIA, WA – The Association of Washington Cities (AWC), an Olympia-based organization advocating on behalf of Washington’s 281 cities and towns, honored Representative Nicole Macri (D-Seattle) with a City Champion Award.

Macri was recognized on December 13 at Seattle City Hall. She is one of eight legislators recognized for championing city issues during the 2017 legislative session. Specifically, Macri is recognized for her advocacy for and efforts to increase the availability of affordable housing in a variety of situations and communities.

“It’s an honor to present this award to Representative Macri,” said AWC Board Member and Seattle Councilmember Sally Bagshaw. “We recognize and applaud her dedication to addressing the complex task of working to provide more affordable housing options for Washington’s residents.”

“Washington’s cities are very fortunate to have someone with the personal and professional commitment and expertise on these issues in our corner in the legislature,” said AWC Chief Executive Officer Peter King. “We have really appreciated Representative Macri’s interest and commitment to ensuring that all communities around the state have a chance to address their own specific needs. Representative Macri is a true champion for cities.” 

“The lack of affordable housing is a problem that is touching every part of our state, requiring bold action from the Legislature and partnership with local communities,” said Macri. “I ran for office because I believe the state can and should be a strong partner with local communities to ensure safety and opportunities for all. I’m glad that organizations like the Association of Washington Cities provide critical policy guidance to legislators as we work to solve issues of statewide importance.”

“AWC is proud to recognize Rep. Macri for her work in the Legislature to help make communities in her district and across the state prosper,” said King. “Cities need champions in the Legislature, like Rep. Macri.”

City Champion Awards are a component of AWC’s Strong Cities, Great State campaign that brings cities and towns together to achieve greater results and deliver stronger services. This is the fourth year the City Champion Awards have been presented to select legislators.

The Association of Washington Cities serves its members through advocacy, education and services. Founded in 1933, AWC is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan corporation that represents Washington's cities and towns before the state legislature, the state executive branch, and with regulatory agencies. Membership is voluntary. However, AWC consistently maintains 100 percent participation from Washington’s 281 cities and towns. AWC also provides training, data and publications, and programs such as the AWC Employee Benefit Trust, AWC Risk Management Service Agency, AWC Workers’ Comp Retro, AWC Drug and Alcohol Consortium, and AWC GIS Consortium.
